A film that has been entirely shot in GTA V and GTA Online will get a world premiere at prestigious film festival SXSW. Titled Grand Theft Hamlet, it tells a story about unemployed actors within GTA V’s world.
Deadline reported late on Wednesday that Grand Theft Hamlet will be part of the Documentary Feature Competition. This category features “World premieres of captivating, real stories by emerging voices.“
Shot entirely inside the video game Grand Theft Auto, this documentary charts the hilarious and profoundly moving story of two out of work actors as they try to stage a full production of Hamlet within this notoriously violent digital world.

According to the film’s page on SXSW’s schedule, the running time is 89 minutes. Written and directed by Pinny Grylls and Sam Crane, this will also be a mix of comedy within the documentary genre. SXSW takes place from March 8th through 16th. So far, Grand Theft Hamlet has already won one award which was the 2023 Stage Innovation Award.
The plot of the film follows two actors, Sam and Mark, who have to remain at home during a pandemic lockdown. The pair struggle with the isolation and decide to jump into GTA Online. In one session, they come up with the idea to perform Shakespeare’s Hamlet at the Vinewood Bowl. There is an attempt from the duo to act out this play on stage in the explosive location that is a GTA Online lobby. We’ll find out how they got on in this upcoming film.
