Pre-release versions of Rockstar’s iconic PSP title Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories have leaked. First spotted by Rockstar Games community member MGgames100 on Twitter (currently known as X), a user uploaded a few pre-release beta versions of GTA LCS for PSP to the GTA Wiki before swiftly being deleted. That said, some people did grab them and have since reuploaded them elsewhere.
Another GTA community member Vadim M also commented on the matter with additional information. The builds were dated July 26th 2005 and 1st September 2005. The final game released on October 24th so they are from a few months before launch. The earlier build is just data that has booting issues whereas the latter one is a fully playable debug version. Some users appear to have been able to load the other version potentially though.
First Differences Discovered
According to MGgames100, there is another build that does not boot either. Though they did spot a few differences between the beta builds and the final game. An example given is that there is an in-development Rockstar Games logo intro with placeholder music to go with it; copies of Lips and Head Radio to be specific.
Another interesting difference found by community member Ash R were brand new loading screen artwork. There are some notable differences from the final game. You can view the beta loading screen artwork below.
Diving Deeper
Users on the GTA Forums have since taken an even further look into these beta builds of GTA LCS. They began playing the game and spotted some changes. For example, some vehicles such as the Phobos VT sport different designs plus the weather appears to be reused from GTA 3 and Vice City in the beta. There appears to be quite a few reused assets from Vice City in this build.
There’s also some new music for the credits and such. Even the HUD which is in view most of the time had a thicker black outline around the text. Some of the users who have played these beta builds have begun uploading gameplay to YouTube.
