Following the GTA 6 trailer, the best selling GTA games have been revealed by the company who track game sales in the UK.
A report by GfK shared by gamesindustry.biz, gives us a detailed look at which GTA games are the most sold in the United Kingdom. This report does only count for disc sales as they were only began reported on a few years ago.
A top selling franchise
Grand Theft Auto is the fourth best selling gaming franchise in the UK. Only FIFA, Call of Duty and Mario in that order have sold more copies. Those other series of games have also released far more games. FIFA and Call of Duty have released a game for over two decades for example. Mario has also had a long lasting legacy spanning a few decades and various types of sub-franchises.
The GTA series has sold over 410 million units total since its first release in 1997. GTA has 12 entries counted in this report. Not all GTA releases are counted for some unknown reason but they are the least popular of the series at least.
List of top selling GTA games
As you’d expect, GTA V is the best selling game. Globally, it has sold over 190 million copies. According to this new report, GTA V has sold three times as many copies as GTA IV in just discs alone, not counting the many million digital copies. The majority of PC players use a digital version for example.
A more interesting fact is how the Xbox One and PS4 versions of GTA 5 sold more copies than the PS3 and Xbox 360 iteration that came first. GTA V took just over a year to release on last gen but did have 9 years before the current gen version came out. GTA V is the second best selling game of all time behind Minecraft. Will GTA VI be able to top this?
Next up is GTA San Andreas. It came in second place which might surprise some people who thought GTA IV would have taken that spot. GTA IV did get third place ahead of Vice City. Behind Vice City is GTA III. Liberty City Stories gets sixth.
The very first GTA game comes in 7th position just front of Vice City Stories. Episodes From Liberty City is followed up by GTA 2 and then London 1969. Chinatown Wars rounds off the list without a mention of the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition and a few others.
Based on current analytics for the game, we expect it to outsell GTA V in the UK. Perhaps in two to three years time we’ll know if this prediction ends up true.
There’s something quite special about Grand Theft Auto’s humble beginnings as a game that was not an instant hit. A small team with a dream. And now it is creating seismic moments within the history of world entertainment.
