GTA V on the Nintendo Switch is exactly what you think…

Fans have wondered for some time now what Grand Theft Auto V would be like on the Nintendo Switch. The portable/docked handheld hybrid has sold over 100 million units since launch but does not have the blockbuster from Rockstar on it. Until now.

Whilst it is not in an official capacity from Rockstar Games, one fan took it upon themselves to do it. YouTube channel Geekerwan recently put together a video where they make use of a hacked Nintendo Switch running Android and Linux. Linux allows for far more gaming possibilities due to the proton layer of translation.

This is how the Steamdeck is able to play games that don’t have a native Linux version. We’ve seen GTA IV, GTA, V, Red Dead 2 and more running well on the Steamdeck previously.

The video showed several games tested running on the Nintendo console and the results were interesting.

GTA V’s start up video actually does fluctuates around 60FPS. According to Geekerwan, GTA V was set to to low graphics and the resolution was 720p. The opening cut scene shows the game struggling to get past 20fps.

As for actual gameplay, it hovers around 6 or 7 FPS. This is clearly not a good experience. Whilst we’d say it is unplayable the game is at least working.

This of course does not include any optimisations that could be made to the game by a development team. If Rockstar were to port GTA V to Switch we’d likely see a much more improved experience performance with significant cut backs to the graphics. Would you like to play GTA V on your Switch?

Be sure to check out the full video by Geekerwan below.
