It has been a turbulent few days for GTA Online players on devices running Linux such as the Steam Deck. After 9 years, Rockstar Games finally implemented a third party anti-cheat which surprised the entire GTA community. Whilst it was met with joy for the most part, it came with a major side effect: no more Steam Deck or Linux support for GTA Online.
As we mentioned in a previous article, it is possible to use the BattlEye anti-cheat Linux-based devices with Proton. It is up to the developer to contact BattlEye to enable it for their game. BattlEye say themselves “No additional work is required by the developer besides that communication.”
Since Rockstar have not took BattlEye up on this, Valve have removed the “Playable” rating of GTA V on Steam Deck for “Unplayable”. Quite the fall from grace for a game that proudly displayed a banner saying “Steam Deck Top Played”. Grand Theft Auto V is one of the top played games on Steam Deck according to Valve’s own charts.
Fans respond with negative reviews
As a result, frustrated fans began leaving negative reviews for the game. Over 1000 negative reviews have been left since the anti-cheat addition. Whilst a significant increase over the past few weeks, it doesn’t really show too much of an increase when you take a look at the bigger picture. Funnily enough, Take-Two listed “review bombing” as a “risk” for their business back in July.
Valve and Rockstar in talks
In a more positive update, Valve are in contact with Rockstar over the situation. Reddit user notjordansime shared a response they got from Steam support. It claimed “We understand that it is frustrating for the users who purchased this game we are currently working with Rockstar Games to find a fix.”
Some people online are claiming they’ve been granted a refund by Valve despite no longer meeting Steam’s refund criteria. If that’s a route you want to pursue, your mileage may vary.
