Well over a year after Rockstar Games purchased FiveM and its development team, an official mod tool has been announced by the group. This is a major shakeup to how Rockstar Games views and acts upon modding. It also suggests validity to leaks of the Rockstar Online Modding Engine aka ROME which could be developed for GTA 6.
A New Era?

On Wednesday, Cfx.re released blog post titled New Official Modding Utility. The team’s statement says that they have created a tool to help convert FiveM assets for the old version of GTA V to work with the new GTA V Enhanced edition.
Currently, assets made for the GTA V Legacy do not work with GTA V Enhanced. However, Rockstar/Cfx.re want to aid the community in moving over their work. To make it easier, they have crafted a new conversion tool.
Below are the file formats this new tool will support:
- Dictionaries of multiple drawables (*.ydd)
- Generic models, geometry, optional embedded textures and lights (*.ydr)
- Complex fragmented skeletons/models used for pedestrians, vehicles, destructible objects, etc. (*.yft)
- Texture Dictionaries (also known as TXD) (*ytd.)
Cfx.re note other file types such as .ycd and .ybn won’t require any conversion to work.
A release date has not been given yet as it is still being polished before a full, public release. The blog post does say that were will be a deep-dive document available on release day and that users should stay tuned for more information. When a release is confirmed, we’ll be sure to cover it right here at RockstarINTEL.
Why is this a big deal?

As pointed out by content creator Mors Mutual, this tool sounds like Rockstar’s Project Soundstage. This internal project has been leaked several times and it is the Rockstar Online Modding Engine (ROME). We’ve covered these rumours several times where Rockstar are developing new systems for GTA Online and FiveM to let creators make new experiences. This comes after ex-developers at Cfx.re/Rockstar revealed how badly things were for them during their time there.
Whilst there was a rumour saying ROME could come to GTA Online in late 2024, it has not come to fruition yet. Rockstar did put a public_mission_creator file in GTA Online’s summer update last year which likely comes from this new paradigm in GTA Online experiences. We’ll have to wait and see if Rockstar’s hopes come true this year in GTA Online or GTA 6.
Another update

This was the second news update from Cfx.re in a week. Just a few days ago, they announced new and approved Game Server Providers for both FiveM and RedM. This partnership allows people who have more official options.
The group shared links to the FiveM and RedM server hosts part of this approved list. These select providers are “flexible solutions designed to scale with your server’s needs”. Cfx.re also mention that they will review other hosting services in the future and add them to the list if deemed suitable.
