Rockstar Games are now officially facing a legal battle due to their actions of last month. This will mark the beginning of what could be a long and highly publicised dispute with nearly 40 ex-employees and a union.
Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reports that the IWGB officially filed a formal legal claim against Rockstar Games on Wednesday. These claims were made on behalf of all the affected UK based staff. The legal claim was also submitted in the UK where Rockstar North is located along with a few other offices.
In addition, the Independent Workers of Great Britain told gamedeveloper.com that they approached Rockstar for meetings over the past few weeks. The goal of the union was to end the dispute with negotiations and without taking a legal route. However, they were given nothing.
“Our members allege that Rockstar’s conduct constitutes trade union victimization and blacklisting” – IWGB legal team

According to the IWGB via the Midlothian View, the union believe the dismissals amount to ‘victimisation and collective dismissal linked to trade union activity’. This is not what Rockstar claimed the firings was for: leaking confidential information. The IWGB told Eurogamer that they are “confident” they are in the right and “will mount a full legal defence with our expert group of caseworkers, legal officers and barristers.”
This comes after we found out yesterday internal appeals were already made last week. Content creator Chris Bratt revealed people close to the situation told him this during a protest outside of Rockstar North.
In other Rockstar Games and Edinburgh news, the company are sponsoring a yearly triathlon event once again. Learn more about it here. Plus, more long-time employees left Rockstar last week but by their own choice; all from the same department…find out about that situation in our report.
