Rockstar Games Reveal How Much They Paid Hackers Last Year

Rockstar Games have just shared how much money they paid out to hackers last year. This headline might come as a big surprise to many but it is true, Rockstar do indeed pay hackers who find issues and report them to the company rather than exploiting players.

As spotted by gta.com.ua, Rockstar Games posted a 2024 round-up on their official HackerOne page. HackerOne is a website that lets anyone report hacks they’re able to achieve on a company’s services. Organisations offer a monetary bounty for the report, reproduction steps and potential fixes. This is ethical hacking and it important to distinguish these people from those who ruin GTA Online lobbies or leak GTA 6 gameplay…

In the case of Rockstar Games, they pay as low as $150 but can go up to $25,000 depending on the severity of the bug. The most common level of severity is medium with 51.42% of reports and paying out $500 to $1000 each. To date, Rockstar Games have paid out $393,150 on HackerOne since 2017.

Rockstar’s most recent statement on HackerOne before now was back in 2019 when they opened up their program from a private, GTA Online, vulnerability program. They shared that it was expanded to GTA V on all platforms, Red Dead Redemption 2 and their companion apps. Now Rockstar have come back after 5 years to discuss 2024 in its entirety.

    Wrapping Up 2024

The new statement starts of by thanking the hacking community: “Hi everyone, Rockstar Games has been participating in the HackerOne program for several years now, and the reports from the HackerOne community have been vital in helping us improve the performance and security of our games. We want to thank every one of you who submitted vulnerability reports to us – your research and attention to detail is greatly appreciated.”

They go on to share that they had 21 hackers report 36 valid reports over the year. In terms of pay out, the final number was $16,875. Most of which were for Low to Medium reports. Rockstar also wanted to highlight the top 3 hackers: @monkeyz31, @orilevitech and @floorball. Rockstar Games Security ends the note by thanking hackers once again and that they “look forward to seeing what each and every one of you discover and report in 2025.”

If you discover an exploit and want to be rewarded, be sure to send it over to Rockstar Games on HackerOne. Have you used this platform before for good? Let us know down in the comments.
