Rockstar Games say GTA 6 has led them to reduce future game development timelines. That’s according do a new report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier.
According to the senior staff at Rockstar which Jason interviewed, their next game won’t take as long as GTA VI took to make. That is what they are reassuring us. There’s good reason for that too.
According to those senior execs, GTA VI is actually a foundation that they will be using to create new content at a “faster pace” than the past decade or so. They specifically “vow” their next title won’t take 8 years and that’s because of all the advancements made to the game’s pipeline.
“The engine, the tools and the team we’ve built during this project will allow us to do things more quickly. I feel confident that we can build on top of this and go more sideways than upwards to build more compelling content.”
Phil Hooker, Director of Technology, Rockstar North

A comparison shared with the reporter likened this period from Grand Theft Auto III to Grand Theft Auto Vice City. These games were made within a year of each other because of all the work was done in the first of the two’s release. We won’t be getting GTA 7 or Red Dead Redemption 3 in a year but perhaps a new IP or a return of a classic one could come within 5 years or so. The thought of this is extremely exciting.
“We foundationally changed a lot of stuff on this project. But now it’s done, and we’re not going to rip it apart.”
Aaron Garbut, Art Director, Rockstar North
