Red Dead Redemption seems to finally be coming to PC according to text strings Rockstar have uploaded today and found by a reputable Rockstar insider. Fans of the classic western have been asking Rockstar Games for a PC port since it originally launched on Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2010.
Last year saw the game come to PS4/PS5 and the Nintendo Switch but PC players were deeply unhappy with the lack of a PC version well over a decade after release.
Rockstar prepare announcement
A reputable Rockstar Games insider Tez2 posted on Twitter (currently known as X) that “It looks like Rockstar is gearing up to release #RDR1 on PC” along with a screenshot of text with references to the game on PC. Below is the text Tez has found in an update made to the Rockstar Games Launcher:
“RDR_ProductPromotion_Intro_Body”: “Journey across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico in Red Dead Redemption, and its zombie-horror companion, Undead Nightmare — now playable on PC.”, “RDR_ProductPromotion_Intro_LongTitle”: “Experience the epic Western adventures that defined a generation.”,
These text strings appear to be marketing promos for Red Dead Redemption on PC. It is listed under “RDR_ProductPromotion_Intro_Body” and that Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare are “now playable on PC”. Of course, it is not just yet.
With this “leak” coming from Rockstar’s own launcher, will it come to Steam at launch? At this moment we don’t know. The GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition took over year to release on Steam and the Epic Games store following exclusivity to Rockstar’s own platform.
Rockstar Games seem to be getting ready for a full PC release of the game. Its 14th anniversary is this week, Saturday May18th. Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, have their quarterly earnings report out on Thursday so this should be announced before that. We could see an official announcement and release date any moment now. We’ll be covering it right here on RockstarINTEL.
Why do people want Red Dead on PC after all this time?
There have been a lot of fans begging Rockstar for a Red Dead Redemption PC port over the past decade or so. The reason being is that it would allow for mods and the game running at a high frame rate. It’s going to be very exciting to see what the modding community do with this 14 year old game.
The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions are locked to 30FPS and are not locked at it, especially the PS3 version. On Xbox Series X and One X in backwards compatibility mode it does run at 4K and it looks stunning after all these years. The PS5/PS4 Pro version released in 2023 with 4K support but also a 60FPS mode that was added in post launch. This gave the masterpiece a new feel which players loved.
Also, some gamers simply don’t own a console anymore that can run the game and have taken to emulation to experience the game on PC. Though for a long time it was not really a viable option. The best way to play the game is still via backwards compatibility on Xbox Series X or the PS5 re-release.
Other recent Red Dead news
Red Dead Redemption was in the news recently as it became part of GTA+, the monthly subscription service for GTA Online. Members of the service now get full access to the game on their Xbox or PS5 consoles. It joined a bunch of classic GTA games and since Red Dead entered, L.A. Noire also bulked up the value.
If you have not checked out the re-release of Red Dead for the Switch or PS4/PS5, a small patch was released a couple of months ago. This was to help stability of the game. It’s nice to see Double 11 are still supporting these ports.
In February, it was revealed that the game had sold over 25 million copies worldwide. We’ll be getting updated figures on the Red Dead Redemption franchise during Take-Two’s investor call on Thursday.
