Red Dead Redemption on PC was leaked by Rockstar Games in May. However, an official announcement nor release is as imminent as many thought.
It has been over 14 years since the epic western released on Xbox 360 and PS3. What more is just a couple of extra months? Whilst fans will be disappointed to have to continue waiting, at least we know it is coming.
Rockstar insider Tez2 who previously discovered Rockstar’s mistake of Red Dead 1 PC text has shared more insight into how it happened and why. He posted on the GTA Forums to explain the situation and why Rockstar Games have not announced the Red Dead Redemption PC port yet.
In case you missed it, Rockstar pushed an update to the Rockstar Games Launcher earlier in May. It contained text such as “RDR_ProductPromotion_Intro_Body”: “Journey across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico in Red Dead Redemption, and its zombie-horror companion, Undead Nightmare — now playable on PC.”
As this is promotional text for the game being purchasable, many believed a swift announcement and release was just around the corner. It has been a few weeks now and Rockstar have remained tight-lipped.
What is happening?
Tez believes the Rockstar Games did not mean to share that text for an announcement and were setting up for the Rockstar Games Launcher to move onto a new branch of development. Over a month and a half ago, Rockstar shifted to a new branch. His theory is that they were moving things over to the new one and accidently included the Red Dead Redemption PC mentions. They were quickly pulled once Tez had shared them with the community.
Below is his full quote:
At this point, the unintended push wasn’t meant for an announcement but was likely a result of whatever Rockstar is preparing for the launcher with the new branch. They shifted to this branch about a month and a half ago, and the May 14th launcher update was the first one based on this branch. The strings appeared the day prior, so the timing is rather convenient. The scenario behind this seems to be just a simple case of them moving stuff from the old branch to the new one and then pushing it into the public branch.
Basically, pushed too early. We might be at the stage where those strings were just added to the dev builds, rather than the one where everything is nearly finalized.

So, confirmation to go with the 14th anniversary of the game or ahead of Take-Two’s recent quarterly reports, did not pan out. Perhaps over the summer we could see something. After all, Red Dead Redemption did launch on PS5, PS4 and Switch last August.
Other recent Red Dead news
Red Dead Redemption was in the news recently as it became part of GTA+, the monthly subscription service for GTA Online. Members of the service now get full access to the game on their Xbox or PS5 consoles. It joined a bunch of classic GTA games and since Red Dead entered, L.A. Noire also bulked up the value.
If you have not checked out the re-release of Red Dead for the Switch or PS4/PS5, a small patch was released a couple of months ago. This was to help stability of the game. It’s nice to see Double 11 are still supporting these ports.
It’s stunning sequel was also added to PlayStation Plus during May. If you want to check out the game on PS5 or PS4, now you can with your membership. You can learn more here.
