This week, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Redemption have just had their price increased years after launch in certain regions. Rockstar Games have decided to raise the cost of all digital versions of the franchise in select locations to varying degrees. This comes after a rumour that there will be a next-gen patch coming this year with a Nintendo Switch 2 version.
The disappointing news of a price rise was first spotted by Twitter user @robertbitten_ who noticed the cost of Red Dead Redemption (the original 2010 Xbox 360 release) had gone from 89 BRL (16$) to 149 ($26) BRL which is quite the hike. Meanwhile Red Dead 2 has gone from 250 BRL to 300. Increases to the price of both RDR2 and the 2023 port of RDR1 on PlayStation also gained a price rise in Brazil.
Following on from this, PureXbox noticed both digital versions of Red Dead Redemption and its sequel on the Xbox Store were raised by £5 in the UK. The original pricing was £54.99 for RDR2 and £24.99 for RDR1. They are now £59.99 and £29.99.
The outlet also reports larger increases in Chile, the Czech Republic and more. Most of the world including the USA are unaffected at least for now. The price increase of the first Red Dead Redemption makes GTA+ have more value.
At the time of writing, the prices have not changed on any of the PC stores: the Rockstar Games Launcher, Epic Games Store and Steam. Ironically, RDR2 is just $15/£15 which is its lowest price currently.

Why Has This Happened?
Rockstar Games nor Take-Two have not communicated why they are increasing the price of a 15 and 7 year old game. Nintendo threw the first punch by charging $80 for Mario Kart World on Switch 2. Xbox followed by announcing select upcoming first party titles would cost $80 up from $70 starting later this year. This caused many people to think Rockstar will charge $80 or more for GTA 6.
Rockstar could potentially be doing price rises but first for their back catalog. Red Dead 2 surpassed 74 million copies sold this month. It had a stronger previous quarter of sales than usual. They might be using this sales growth to earn more money. Plus, the game has been the most downloaded PS4 game for the past 5 months in a row.

On top of that, we briefly mentioned above Rockstar are rumoured to be releasing a next-gen patch for Red Dead Redemption 2. If this is not a full re-release like GTA V where you have to buy it again, it Rockstar upping the price now could be the reason ahead of a next-gen patch for it later this year or beyond. Why Rockstar would do that months in advance though seems a little off. Of course, this is all speculation.
In addition to the price rises, we are currently investigating changes to the physical disc copies of Red Dead Redemption 2. There appears to be a change of physical contents in select regions. Once we’ve learned more about the situation, we’ll run a story here on RockstarINTEL.
In other Red Dead news, the Red Dead Online Event Month is still ongoing. You can view all of the details here. For more Red Dead Redemption news updates, stay tuned to RockstarINTEL.
