Red Dead Redemption 2’s multiplayer component, Red Dead Online, has been labelled as a highly successful game. That’s according to Take-Two Interactive‘s CEO Strauss Zelnick.
The CEO has taken part in a number of interviews following the company’s Q4 2026 quarterly earnings and Fiscal Year 2026 results. One these interviews was with IGN and the top boss was asked about Red Dead Online.
The game has not had a proper content update in around 5 years. Aside from couple of small things as we saw last year and the monthly events, there has not been anything substantial. We saw fan-led initiatives such as #SaveRedDeadOnline previously but nothing has happened. Rockstar have remained focused on GTA 6. Due to this, avid players of the game have questioned Rockstar and Take-Two’s decisions.

When asked by IGN about Red Dead Online and if it could have put up GTA Online numbers, Zelnick stated that there is no “missed opportunity” as Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold over 85 million copies which we reported on last week. He also said that Red Dead Online has been a success. You can read Zelnick’s full quote below:
“So let me be clear… there is literally nothing about Red Dead selling 85 million units that could signal a missed opportunity. And Red Dead Online has been immensely successful and long lasting.”
The CEO shared more thoughts. He believes if GTA was not within the Take-Two family, Red Dead would be talked about more. Also, whilst Zelnick is not a gamer himself he actually enjoys engaging with Rockstar’s most recent release.
“I actually personally think Red Dead is just amazing and I love engaging with it. And I think the reason it continues to sell is that it’s just spectacular entertainment. It’s beautiful and it feels very up to date despite the fact that it’s not a new title.”
In other recent Red Dead Redemption 2 news, the game became the 3rd best selling game of all time last week. On top of that, it was the most downloaded PS4 title last month. Also, it returned to the PlayStation Plus catalog this week.
