Remedy have provided another small development update on the Max Payne Remake along with the impact the game’s cost is having on the company. Every quarter, the game developer share financial reports for the previous three months to investors and drop comments about whereabouts their games are in the development cycle.
This quarter is no different and it continues to be worked on in full production. As of February 2025, the game has been in full production for around 7+ months. According to Remedy, this process takes around 200 employees between 1 and 2 years to get the game ready for 6 months of beta testing. The game is on the larger side, akin to Alan Wake 2 in budget, meaning it will likely take the full 2 years or so.
Now for quick recap for those who missed or forgot the last update they gave us. We previously heard from Remedy about the Max Payne 1&2 Remake back in November. The company said that they want to “create an excellent, commercially successful Max Payne Remake”. Also, the team making the game “is delivering well against the very high expectations set by Rockstar.”
Development Cost Increase
Let’s we take a look at the latest updates from Remedy. CEO Tero Virtala had some comments in their Financial Statements Release for Q4 2024. He said “In the fourth quarter of 2024, revenue increased 13.1% from a year ago to EUR 11.7 million. Development fees increased, driven by higher development fees from Max Payne 1&2 Remake and Control 2.”
As mentioned above, this double pack of remakes has a budget around the size of Alan Wake 2; that game was Remedy’s most expensive project yet. The estimated budget for that game was €70 million. The split was 50m to development and 20m to marketing. Rockstar Games are the ones funding this game and paying the costs at some point.

Progress Report
Furthermore, Remedy noted in their earnings that the Max Payne 1&2 Remake is continuing to make make “steady progress” in the full production stage. They also added that the “development progress is heading towards key development objectives together with the game’s publisher Rockstar Games.” That’s unfortunately everything Remedy gave us this time. Though the last quarter was a bigger event, their Capital Markets Day, hence why we got more information out of them.
This is great to hear and we look forward to potentially getting a reveal at some point. If the game takes 2.5 years in full production and testing based on their stage gate process, we could get these remakes in our hands at the end of 2026.
Based on Remedy’s consistency and transparency, we’ll hear more about the Max Payne once their Q1 2025 has concluded. This will be around on April 30th 2025. Their half year review is set for August 12th. As usual, we’ll be covering the information right here on RockstarINTEL.
