GTA 6 just got even more political. The lack of discs for the game alongside PlayStation’s recent announcement of disc production ending has been deeply unpopular. So much so, politicians are now aware of the anti-consumer practises.
French presidential candidate and La France Insoumise leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon took to Twitter last night to voice his thoughts on GTA 6 launching without a disc.
The man who is looking to become leader of France next year launched an attack on those making anti-consumer decisions by calling video games “cultural assets” rather than “mere merchandise”. The politician said back in 2022 that video games are a “total art form”.

“With GTA 6 without a disc in 2026 and Sony’s announcement of the end of physical disc sales for games in 2028, the question arises of how we view these products.
Tomorrow, you will pay without ever owning anything. No loan, no resale, no guarantee of keeping what we’ve paid for.
Video games are not mere merchandise; they are cultural assets, and the law in force must apply to them.
We will open the project in 2027. Players have rights too!”

A member of the European parliament Leïla Chaibi also provided her thoughts. The politician published a video talking about how there needs to be a way to save physical video games and linked a petition.
As we’ve seen in recent weeks, there is strong motivation in France to fight the corporations making decisions against the people. It’ll be interesting to see What could be done legislatively not only in France but across Europe. When Europe makes big decisions, it typically follows worldwide.
For now though, The only way to purchase Grand Theft Auto 6 is through digital stores or code in the box from traditional retailers. It sounds like this situation is far from over.
