Rockstar Games released a new PC version of GTA V on Tuesday, GTA V Enhanced, which comes with an FPS cap of 120. This limitation has frustrated PC players who have great hardware capable of pushing the game past 120FPS.
Also, this is despite Rockstar themselves claiming this new version would support higher frame rates over the old/Legacy version which was capped at 188FPS. With the 120FPS cap in place, it means this new version is inferior in terms of frame rate limit compared to the original version.
Thankfully, one well-known community member has found a simple way to bypass the limit forced upon players in-game. We’ll be guiding you through how to do it whether you’re playing on Steam, the Rockstar Games Launcher or Epic Games Store.
Removing The FPS Cap
Community member @Floorball__ via @Gtamen shared that adding -maxFrameLimit 200 to the game’s launch arguments will up the limit to 200. You can change the number to your desired value.
To add this code to the game’s launch arguments on Steam, right click the game, click properties, then on the general tab type or copy the above code into the launch options bar.

If you play on the Rockstar Games Launcher, click on settings in the launcher, select GTA V Enhanced on the left hand side, scroll down to launch arguments, then copy or type the above code into the bar.

As for the Epic Games Store version, right click the game in your library, click manage, toggle on launch options, then type the code from above into the the bar.

Having tested the increased cap myself, I can certainly say it makes a huge difference. I play games on a 300Hz display paired with an RTX 4080 Super so I’ve been used to playing games at that sort of performance whereas pre-cap GTA V Enhanced played.
With all ray tracing effects turn on up to the max and no upscaler used, the game is running between 130-170 FPS which is a nice improvement over the 120 lock. The game also looks far, far better with all of the new graphics options not found in the Legacy version.

FPS Cap To Be Removed?
It is possible Rockstar will remove the FPS cap at some point and here’s why. Users of NVIDIA’s 50 Series GPUs noticed Frame Generation was not available in the settings despite Rockstar saying DLSS 4 support would be at launch. Naturally, this would mean not just the upscaler version but also MFG.
Rockstar Games did acknowledge the lack of MFG and confirmed support for the technology is planned for both NVIDIA and AMD cards; this will come “at a future date”. It is unfortunate Rockstar did not make this known pre-launch but at least we know it is coming for those that want to experience it.
UPDATE:
Rockstar Games released a patch after this article was published which removed the FPS cap. You no longer need to use the command line argument to have an FPS count above 120.
