GTA V will still be really popular on Twitch even when GTA 6 comes out according to the platform’s CEO. In a new interview, Dan Clancy who is in charge of Twitch, shared his thoughts on GTA 6 and why GTA V will continue to dominate livestreaming.
During an interview at The Game Business Live this month, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy discussed GTA 5’s success on the platform. GTA RP has been wildly popular including on Twitch racking up billions of hours watched over the past few years. This side of GTA is huge and it is interesting to hear what the man in charge of the platform which hosts most of the GTA RP livestreams on has to say.
Naturally, Clancy said is excited for GTA 6 was disappointed it got delayed from Fall 2025 to May 2026 like everyone else. We learned from Twitch in April that GTA V earned more than 1.4 billion hours in watch time. This made it the most watched video game in all of 2024 on Twitch. GTA VI would likely have increased that number, perhaps on a level no one could have predicted. However Twitch will not see the growth this calendar year from GTA VI.
What’s So Great About GTA
Twitch’s CEO said GTA is “interesting” because it does not fit like the other most watched games (League of Legends, Call of Duty etc). The reason Clancy gives is “With something like League of Legends, if you don’t play League of Legends, it is hard to watch LoL for hours if you don’t play LoL.”
Whereas role play is the big draw for GTA on Twitch; something not even an official part of the game. Clancy adds “It has really become improvisational performance art. I’ve often said that there’s a theater school that should just teach a course in GTA role play, where the theater students are acting out characters. An interesting part of what happens, is you get these emergent stories, because the streamers are playing characters in this virtual world. Drama ensues and story develops and now it is not AI but real people behind them.”

GTA VI Without RP At Launch
The GTA VI launch is going to be “a little strange” according to Clancy. He says this is down to the game being a console-only launch first. GTA RP is only available via FiveM on PC so it is “not part of the initial launch”. The game will likely not release on the platform for potentially 6 months to 18 months later based on Rockstar’s previous release patterns.
This Will Let GTA V Continue To Thrive
Due GTA VI not coming to PC right away, Clancy explains this is why GTA V will remain highly popular on Twitch. Streamers and fans alike will use GTA V over GTA VI for that RP content.
“The interesting thing was it was going to be a little strange because whenever it does come out it’s coming out on the console and roleplay will not be part of the initial launch and so GTA V will still interestingly be popular on Twitch even as everyone’s playing GTA 6 for a while so I will find the whole GTA space very interesting as six comes out and then as it adds PC play and roleplay.”
He adds that although he is disappointed in the delay to GTA 6, just like everyone else, he doesn’t expect the game to be on PC to begin with, or to have a new online component at the start, so GTA 5 is likely to remain dominant on Switch for a long time to come.
