GTA V was the 3rd best selling game last week in the UK. Last month saw the next gen re-release of Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S and it is proving to be hugely successful for Rockstar Games. The cultural phenomenon is not showing signs of slowing down.
As reported by gamesindustry.biz using data released by GSD, GTA V was pushed down to 3rd place by the newly released and mega hit LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Elden Ring also had another strong week taking back a place which Grand Theft Auto V dethroned from it in previous weeks. Despite dropping down, it is still holding its own against other new titles. Unlike those new games, GTA V was first releases almost 9 years ago. The new gen version is helping it sell copies but does not make up for every single sale.

How successful was the next gen version of GTA Online?
The GSD data shows that it was that Grand Theft Auto Online was the 10th best selling game in the week ending April 10th 2022. GTA Online’s performance shows the multiplayer component is still a force to be reckoned with. GTA Online became purchasable as a standalone game for the next gen release on the Xbox Series consoles and free to PlayStation 5 owners. As it was free to download on PS5, this data is not tracked in the charts. Despite this, the sales from only Xbox Series X/S players put it overall 10th position in the sales chart.

What had an impact on this chart?
One important thing to note is that GTA V and GTA Online were being sold at a heavily discounted price on the Xbox and PlayStation stores. The retail price for the combo of both games is £34.99 but at the moment it is currently being sold on Xbox for £17.49 until June. GTA Online on its own has a charge of £8.75. And as we mentioned previously, PS5 players cannot pay for GTA Online until June as the game is free meaning they only have to pay £8.75 for both versions. This low price tag absolutely had an impact on the game’s success against full price games around £50. However, it should not diminish the success of a game being re-released on its 3rd console generation taking down new next gen focused titles.
Rockstar continues to take over the charts
Red Dead Redemption 2, another much loved Rockstar title from 2018, ended the week in 6th position. It might have released in 2018 and the online segment has been neglected by Rockstar but RDR2 is still selling a ton of copies every single week. The performance of these three that are not exactly brand new games shows how successful Rockstar Games continues to be.
