GTA V had an absolutely huge month in July according to PlayStation. Not to far behind was Red Dead Redemption 2 which also did well once again, becoming the 8th best selling game of all time. In this article we’ll be taking a look at details provided by PlayStation for their PS4 and PS5 consoles.
GTA V jumps over the competition on PS5
According to Sony, GTA V was a hit on PlayStation 5 last month. It was the 2nd most downloaded game on PS5 in the United States and Canada, moving up plenty of places from the month prior. Only Stray, a new release, was downloaded more. The same thing happened in Europe too, it went from being further down the table to 3rd place.
Last gen players are not done yet
PlayStation also revealed the download charts for the PS4. Grand Theft Auto V climbed to 3rd place in the USA and Canada whilst it reached 4th place in Europe. Despite the huge surge of next gen GTA V sales, the old version of the game continues to sell well too.
Why did GTA V have such a successful month?
Usually when a new content update comes to GTA Online it brings back a lot of players just because it is new things to do in Los Santos. However in July, GTA Online received a content update which not only brought content but fan requested quality of life changes. The Criminal Enterprises DLC contained agent missions, new vehicles, car dealerships and more!
The changes Rockstar Games made to the game have been some of the highly requested tweaks for years and they have significantly improved the game. A nerf was made to the Oppressor Mk2 as well as Sell Missions being playable during invite only matches. This for many of us was such a game changing update. I think this is the reason why the concurrent player count we can see via Steam is far higher since the update compared to the weeks before.
Red Dead 2 keeps on moving despite no updates
Red Dead Redemption 2, the beloved Rockstar title from 2018, was downloaded quite a lot according to Sony’s official charts. It ended the month of July in 8th place for Canada and the US whereas it was 10th in Europe. This is down from 4th and 5th place in June.
The classic might have released in 2018 and the online segment has been neglected by Rockstar but RDR2 is still selling a ton of copies every month. Many new games that players praise highly are outsold by the western masterpiece. It has been over 300 days since Red Dead Online received a content update so our new featured article delves into the issues facing the RDO Community.
