The GTA V Story DLC packs were cancelled for the reason we all assumed but we have learned even more about them. In a new interview, a former Rockstar Games developer has revealed this information on the planned single-player expansions.
The ex-Rockstar employee is Joe Rubino. He worked at Rockstar Games for several years on GTA V’s story and Max Payne 3 in the camera department. He just took part in an interview for the SanInPlay YouTube channel, spotted by GTA Focal.
Joe kicks things off by saying most of the team moved onto Red Red Redemption 2 whilst he went onto doing GTA Online but also took on a “kick ass” GTA V standalone expansion. He was one of the main camera artists on this project.
Despite it shaping up to be a fun DLC, half of it was finished, and a lot of money was spent on it, Rockstar’s management ultimately shelved it for GTA Online content as Joe explains:
“You what happened was, when GTA Online came out, it was so much of a cash cow and people were loving it so much that it was hard to make a argument that a standalone DLC would out-compete that”.
Rubino actually goes onto say “I think looking back now I would say that you could probably do both, but that was a business decision that they made and I was upset about that.” When the Trevor DLC was cancelled, Joe said he was a bit sour at the decision.
I was a little upset about that and actually was a lot of the reason for me being a little sour at that time. I was like “yo, what the f*** guys, this s***’s awesome, let’s keep going, let’s finish this s***.

Mr Rubino also shared the fact that the camera team’s office was right next to Rockstar’s top boss Sam Houser. This was a secure section of Rockstar’s New York office. Joe explains that when you had a key pass into their building, you had to go through three layers of security. Plus, there was an extra layer of security for their office space. They were considered more top secret as the camera team were always working further ahead of everyone else in the company.
Spills of info
This information adds to the pile of stuff we’ve recently learned about the cancelled GTA V Story DLC. Over the years, code in GTA V’s files revealed we’d see one DLC for each of the main protagonists including the Agent Trevor one.
Just a few months ago Steven Ogg who plays Trevor in GTA V said his DLC would have seen Trevor go undercover. It was partially mocapped by Steven. He went onto say “it just disappeared and never did it and they never followed up on it but I thought that would be cool like he gets hired.” The general idea was reworked into The Doomsday Heist for GTA Online. The Diamond Casino Heist update was also adapted from singleplayer content.
Plus, last month we got our first listen of a piece of music created for the Agent Trevor DLC. The track is called Clifford and was made by Sweet Valley. You can learn more about this piece of music created for the canned DLC here.
