We might be entering GTA V’s 10th year but it is still selling millions every month or so. Grand Theft Auto V was the fourth best selling game in the whole of Europe throughout all of 2022 according to the official charts released by data company GSD via gamesindustry.biz.
Despite extremely strong competition from huge new releases such as Elden Ring, FIFA 23 and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, GTA V held its own. It sold more than new releases such as God of War Ragnarok, Horizon: Forbidden West, Pokémon Legends: Arceus and more. This chart data includes all physical and digital sales on all platforms aside from Nintendo’s digital copies so it’s quite an accurate representation of these games are doing.

In comparison to the previous year, Grand Theft Auto V has dropped down two places. It was the second best selling game of 2021 in Europe it but faced much tougher competition this year. Elden Ring released in Spring 2022 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was a big step up over the previous year’s release. It makes sense to see GTA V down two places as these couple of games enter the charts.
Interestingly, GTA V game was the fourth best selling digital game overall but was not in the top ten at all for physical copies.
UK and European Charts for December 2022
The game was also the fourth best selling game in December 2022 for the UK according to gamesindustry.biz This includes all digital and physical copies sold on all platforms in the region aside from Nintendo’s digital sales. This is up from seventh place in November 2022. It’s likely it sold better as there was the new GTA Online Los Santos Drug Wars update and Christmas time.
As for the whole of Europe, it was in fifth place as per the new report from GSD via gamesindustry.biz. This is up from seventh place in the previous month of November. I think we can put this down to the sales of new consoles at Christmas and the new Los Santos Drug Wars update.
This chart is not the only one that GTA V did well in during 2022. It was watched over 1 billion hours total on Twitch throughout 2022. You can read more on that story here.
Red Dead is not dead yet

Red Dead Redemption II is a curious case. We’ve known for some time it has sold well since its release in 2018 but Rockstar have not released any major new Red Dead Online content in well over a year. On top of that they announced in 2022 there would be no more new content despite the community’s efforts with the #SaveRedDeadOnline campaign.
This western masterpiece was the twelfth best selling game in Europe in terms of physical and digital sales combined. This is down six places compared to 2021 even though 2022 saw far more new, major releases. DR2 did not feature in 2022’s physical only charts but did come sixth for digital.
This all follows our report that Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online recorded its highest ever concurrent player count in January 2023. It was also recently revealed that Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold over 46 million copies as we reported on here. If you’re wondering what’s happening in Red Dead Online this month you can check out our rundown here.

This is down from ninth place in November 2022. As for the whole of Europe, it was in ninth place as per the new report from GSD via gamesindustry.biz. This is the same as in the previous month of November.
