Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 have continued their strong form from the first half of 2023 in terms of sales and downloads. The results of September 2023 show these two from Rockstar Games beat out titles newly released in 2023.
New reports with verified data shows these two titles from Rockstar Games just keep on going despite their age and brand new blockbuster releases. We’re over half way into the year now and the two titles are hanging on towards the top of the charts.
September also saw the first full month of Red Dead Redemption re-released on PS4 and PS5 for the first time. This means we get to see how that game is doing across the two regions on the PlayStation platform too after just over a month.
PlayStation reveals GTA V clings on despite massive new games
PlayStation have released their monthly game charts for PS5, PS4, PSVR and F2P games. During August, GTA V was the most downloaded game in all of Europe. Across the Atlantic, it was the 4th most downloaded game in August for the US and Canada.
Due to new game releases, GTA 5 slipped in both charts during September. In the USA and Canada it was 8th. Meanwhile in Europe, it came in 6th position. The drop in downloads can be attributed to the release of EA SPORTS FC 24, Baldur’s Gate 3, The Crew Motorfest and more.
As for the PS4 chart, it maintained itself. In Europe, it stayed in 4th place whereas in North America it moved up from 7th position to 6th.
Next up is where Red Dead Redemption’s re-release charted. Due to no native PS5 version being made available, it only shows up on the PS4 charts. Downloads to the PS5 are included in this. In its first full month, Red Dead Redemption on the PS4 was the 12th most downloaded game in the USA and Canada. This is down from 3rd in its limited time out in August. Meanwhile in Europe it charted in 13th, down from 2nd.
Its sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, also did well in September. For the US and Canada chart, it stuck itself in 4th place for a second month in the row. Meanwhile across the pond it charted in 3rd place behind EA SPORTS FC 24 and Minecraft. Red Dead 2 can only be counted in the PS4 chart as there is only a PS4 version.
European Chart Placements
We can also take a look at combined sales of physical discs and digital copies in all of Europe from last month. These were reported by gamesindustry.biz and tracked by GSD. Rockstar’s GTA V moved down five places in September. This is due to the release of EA Sports FC 24, Starfield, NBA 2K24, The Crew Motorfest, Mortal Kombat 1 and Payday 3. Meanwhile Red Dead Redemption 2 moved down from 5th to 8th, just behind Grand Theft Auto V.
This data does not include physical release of Red Dead Redemption 1 on Nintendo Switch or PS4 as that released in October. We’ll know more about that placement next month.
