A selection of new data shows both GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 have kicked off 2026 with a strong start much like in previous years. The sales and download data of games for January and February has been reported by official sources such as PlayStation. Let’s take a look at how well Rockstar Games’ titles are doing so far in GTA 6’s release year.
GTA V Is The 2nd Most Played Game
According to Ampere Analysis via The Game Business, GTA V was the 2nd most played game across Steam, Xbox and PlayStation in January. That’s in terms of monthly active users. The player count figure Ampere have is 21.2 million people. This is down 1.75m from December but that makes sense given the A Safehouse in the Hills update came out that month and it was Christmas.
According to The Game Business, this January figure actually expected with the publication saying “performance is largely what the game always does in January”.
Overall, this is quite a statement. GTA V/GTA Online came out over 12 years ago and is only behind free-to-play king Fortnite which lots of children can play. GTA V is ahead of CS2, Roblox, Call of Duty, EA FC 26 and Minecraft. In terms of revenue, it was the 7th during January. Red Dead 2 was 8th. This is US revenue only via Circana.
One last fun stat is about Grand Theft Auto VI. Over 5000 articles were written about the game in January according to level up. No trailer, no screenshots, no problem. It is still the most talked about game behind ARC Raiders.
PlayStation Reveal Rockstar Is Still On Top

PlayStation have published their monthly game charts for PS5, PS4, PSVR and F2P game downloads throughout January and February. Let’s start by taking a look at GTA V.
In January, GTA V was the 2nd most downloaded PS5 game in the USA/Canada and 3rd in the European chart. These placements are actually up a few places in the December chart despite the A Safehouse in the Hills update coming in the holiday month. Grand Theft Auto V did slip in February to 4th in Europe and 6th in North America.
Taking a look at the PS4 version, GTA V was the 5th most downloaded title in Europe and 6th in the US and Canada charts. Meanwhile it took a tumble in February to 7th in Europe and 9th in the North American chart.
Meanwhile Red Dead Redemption 2 was the most downloaded PS4 title in both regions across both months. It has been the most downloaded game every month since last summer on PS4. PlayStation also listed Red Dead Redemption 2 as the 20th most downloaded PS4 title in both charts. However, this is likely a mistake. It would make sense to be Red Dead Redemption 1 as that had a re-release on PS5 as a free upgrade for the PS4 version. It did not appear in the PS5 charts.
