Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 have continued their strong form from the first half of 2023 in terms of sales and downloads. The results of August 2023 show these two from Rockstar Games beat out titles newly released in 2023.
New reports with verified data shows these two titles from Rockstar Games just keep on going despite their age and brand new blockbuster releases. We’re over half way into the year now and the two titles are hanging on towards the top of the charts.
August also saw Red Dead Redemption re-released on PS4 and PS5 for the first time meaning we get to see how that game is doing across the two regions on the PlayStation platform too.
PlayStation reveals GTA V tops the charts
PlayStation have released their monthly game charts for PS5, PS4, PSVR and F2P games. During July, GTA V shot to the top in both the regions of North America and Europe. In August however, the game dropped down to 4th place in the US and Canada. This is due to the release of Madden NFL 24, Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. However, it remained on the throne in Europe fighting off the new releases.
As for the PS4 chart, it moved down a few places in North America coming in 7th position. It dropped down to 4th place in Europe as well.
Next up is where Red Dead Redemption’s re-release charted. Due to no native PS5 version being made available, it only shows up on the PS4 charts. Downloads to the PS5 are included in this. In its first month, Red Dead Redemption on the PS4 was the 3rd most downloaded game in the USA and Canada; just behind Madden NFL 24 and Minecraft. Meanwhile in Europe it charted a place higher in second place just behind Minecraft.
This is not surprising given it was trending before its release on PS4 and was the top selling game for a few days. It is also worth noting the game launched on August 17th so it only had 2 weeks of sales compared to other games having the full month.
Its sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, also did well in August. For the US and Canada chart, it lost places to RDR1, Minecraft and Madden so it was in 4th place. Meanwhile across the pond it came runner up to Minecraft for Europe, maintaining second place. Red Dead 2 can only be counted in the PS4 chart as there is only a PS4 version.
It is possible RDR2 had another strong month due to people re-downloading the game after playing RDR1’s re-release but also PlayStation released a new bundle for the games and a hefty discount on the sequel.
UK Chart Placements
The past few weeks of UK boxed chart sales have arrived from Gfk via gamesindustry.biz. Grand Theft Auto V features in them. It started August off in 5th place but reached 2nd position for the week ending August 19th. For the week ending August 26th, Grand Theft Auto V was in 10th place. It moved up to 8th position for the week ending September 2nd. It remained 8th place for the following week as week.
The report for UK digital and physical games sales for August 2023 were released this week by GSD via gamesindustry.biz. GTA V moved down from 2nd place to 3rd due to Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon releasing.
Red Dead Redemption 2 lost its 3rd place to GTA V but ended up in 4th position. The re-release of Red Dead Redemption on PS4 and Switch came just behind it in 5th. This chart does not include digital sales on the Switch. The game was charting highly on the Switch eShop so it is possible RDR1’s re-release actually charted higher.
