Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 have one again continued their strong year in 2023 in terms of sales and downloads. The results of the first half of 2023 are in and these two from Rockstar Games beat out titles released in 2023
New reports with verified data shows these two titles from Rockstar Games just keep on going despite their age and brand new blockbuster releases. We’re over six months into the year now and the two titles are hanging on in the charts.
GTA V hits 5 across Europe in 2023
Grand Theft Auto 5 has been revealed to be the 5th best selling game in all of Europe during the first half of 2023. GTA Online, the standalone next gen version, is in 20th place.
Red Dead Redemption 2 also came not too far behind GTA V, it ended this half in 7th position. This data comes from GSD via gamesindustry.biz.
The remarkable things to take away from this is GTA V is still 5th beating out Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Resident Evil 4, and more. It was only behind Hogwarts Legacy, Diablo 4, FIFA 23, and behemoth The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
On top of that, GTA Online’s standalone version is only available digitally unlike the other games having a physical release.
This first half of 2023 time period began in January and ended in June. It also accounts for all disc and digital games. In this time period, over 76 million games were sold on all platforms which was a small increase over last year’s first half. 29.1 million were discs, 9% down on last year. Digital came to 47 million copies, 7% increase over last year.
The two caveats here are Nintendo do not report digital sales nor are indie games included.
Some sales sales of GTA V, GTA Online and Red Dead 2 in recent months can be attributed to the Steam Summer Sale and the new DLC update to GTA Online.
PlayStation reveals GTA V is almost tops the charts
PlayStation released their monthly game charts for PS5, PS4, PSVR and F2P games last week. After becoming runner up in 2nd place for the USA, Canada and Europe during May, GTA V just dropped down a bit. In both the North America and European charts, it moved down to 4th place.
This is likely down to many fans downloading the game ahead of the San Andreas Mercenaries update that arrived in early June. Also, Street Fighter 6 released on June 2nd followed closely by Diablo IV, F1 23 and FINAL FANTASY XVI. An almost podium finish for GTA V in both regions despite new competition is a feat.
As for the PS4 chart, it reached 4th place in North America and 4th place in Europe. This up and stationary from the previous month. In May, it was in 6th place for the the US and Canada then 4th place in Europe. Again, given Diablo IV, FINAL FANTASY XVI and Diablo IV, this is pretty good going on the older machine.
We can also see how Red Dead Redemption 2 is doing in June as well. For the US and Canada chart, it moved up from 5th to 3rd position. Meanwhile across the pond it stayed in 5th place for Europe for yet another month. Red Dead 2 can only be counted in the PS4 chart as there is only a PS4 version.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has remained in the top 10 again as well. It was the 10th best selling game last month; down a place in the previous month.
