Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 are off to a great start in 2023 in terms of sales and downloads. New reports with verified data shows these two titles from Rockstar Games have continued their end of 2022 success into the first month of 2023.
Sony reveals GTA V claims the crown, again
PlayStation released their monthly game charts for PS5, PS4, F2P and PSVR games on Friday. GTA 5 has once again taken the top step of both the USA/Canada and Europe charts. This is up from 4th and 3rd place last month. On the PS4 chart we can see GTA V came in 4th place in Europe which is the same as the previous month. The game moved up a place from 6th to 5th in the USA and Canada. The surge of downloads is likely down to more PS5 stock being made available in the past month.
Red Dead 2 can only be counted in the PS4 chart as there is only a PS4 version. In the US/Canada chart it came in 3rd place then 6th place for Europe. Last month saw it in 6th place in both regions.
Europe Chart Placements
The European charts report for games sales during January 2023 by GfK via gamesindustry.biz have been released. This data includes all digital and physical copies sold in the continent and GTA 5 was in 2nd position. Just behind it in 3rd place was Red Dead Redemption 2. If we compare it to December 2022, GTA V moved up from 5th place and RDR2 leapfrogged from 9th position.
UK Chart Placements
The report for UK games sales for January 2023 were released on Friday by GfK via gamesindustry.biz. The report offers some interesting takeaways involving GTA V and RDR2. For starters, just over 2 million games were sold in January 2023 which is a slight drop compared to last year. Despite an overall drop Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 both sold more than they did in the same month last year.
Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 may have had better sales than last year but their chart positions are also impressive. GTA V was the second best selling game in the UK for January 2023 behind FIFA 23. This is up one place from 2022 due to Pokémon Legends: Arceus releasing last January. The game also is a two places higher from December 2022. Meanwhile the western epic that is Red Dead Redemption 2 has continued to power on. It was the 4th best selling game last month; up from 5th place in the previous year. It was much further down in 11th place for December 2022 so this shows it is having a strong comeback.
An interesting addition
As mentioned above GTA 5 is still doing numbers but the standalone version of Grand Theft Auto Online has also entered the charts. This version only on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles released last Spring therefore it was not in last year’s charts. Last month it came in 8th place despite not being in the charts at all for December 2022. It will be interesting to see how this developers as the Los Santos Drug Wars content drip-feed continues.
