Rockstar Games had a selection of famous rappers in the mix to play GTA V’s Franklin and Lamar.
Whilst we know Shawn Fonteno portrayed the iconic Franklin Clinton and Gerald “Slink” Johnson is Lamar Davis, Shawn has revealed who else were competing for their roles.
In a recent interview with FullSquadGaming, Shawn and Ned Luke who plays Michael De Santa shared behind the scenes and memories from the making of Grand Theft Auto V.
What could have been…
Fonteno says “They had everybody. Nipsey (Hussle), YG (Young Gangsta), Problem… my competition was strong.” He also went onto say they were all going for either Lamar or Franklin’s parts in the blockbuster game.
It would have been interesting to have seen someone else play Franklin or Lamar. However, as we’ve seen over this past decade, Shawn along with Slink, Ned and Steven Ogg (Trevor), played their part incredibly and have become iconic.
It would be hard to imagine anyone else in their place as the character’s voice and facial/motion capture in GTA V. Just this “Yee Yee Ass Haircut” moment between Fonteno and Johnson going viral shows their performances.
Who would you have liked to have played Franklin or Lamar if Shawn and Slink weren’t to be? Let us know down in the comments below.
Trevor IRL was “a nasty dude”
Another clip from the FullSquadGaming interview has Ned and Shawn talking about what it was like to work with Steven who played Trevor. Shawn goes as far as to say “he’s a nasty dude” all in good fun. At this time of writing, the full interview has not been shared.
