Netflix told investors how pleased they are with the GTA Trilogy remasters once again. The company just held their Q4 2024 earnings call and report where a lot was discussed.
Gregory K. Peters who is the Co-CEO was asked about Netflix’s game department: “How do you assess your progress in the video game space? How have the engagement trends been? When do you anticipate video games will have an impact on subscriber growth or retention?”
In response to these questions Peters said that “I’d say we’ve learned quite a bit and made some good early progress since we’ve launched games. We’ve, of course, launched a bunch of games. With some highlights among them, the critically claimed Oxenfree II stands out; certainly, Grand Theft Auto, where we drove tens of millions of downloads.”
Later on in this response he mentioned that “we wanna do more recognizable mainstream titles, whether that is licensed titles like GTA, and we’re going to have more of those big licensed titles to come that we’re looking forward to, as well as homegrown titles based on our IP.”
Could this mean more Rockstar Games titles come to Netflix in the future? Possibly but GTA is Rockstar’s biggest IP and San Andreas alone is wildly popular decades after launch. The trilogy to date has nearly 40 million downloads via Netflix. GTA San Andreas made up the overwhelming majority of them.
This comes after GTA III and Vice City left the streaming service in December last year. However, GTA San Andreas remains part of the subscription for the foreseeable future. So far, there has been no indication if/when it will leave.
