A supposed leak of the GTA San Andreas source code has turned out to be fake. Even worse, there were accusations of ransomware. There’s more to the story and this is a word of warning to anyone who thought about or are thinking about downloading it. The source code would unlock new modding capabilities and reveal secrets about the game.
A few days ago word began spreading on social media by users in the GTA community that it had been leaked. An archive appeared online but was password protected. Despite it being distributed with password protection, some people got their hands on the password. Other users reportedly started selling the password. This is when talk of it being ransomware came about.
According to some Twitter users, the Rhysida ransomware was used to encrypt the files. This is rather than the files containing ransomware. In contrast, more savvy fans noticed the file size is that of the final San Andreas game. If it really was the source code, it would be larger.

A user called National Pepper, known for their in-depth GTA and Rockstar investigations, Tweeted that this was all a hoax. He stated someone wanted to trade the source code for GTA San Andreas in exchange for GTA V. They then shared several screenshots of the apparent folder as proof they have it.
These folders and files carry the same name as those found in the recently uploaded files. National Pepper claims neither of these are related and the newly found archive is “probably” a hoax. Quite the let down for many GTA fans.
On Christmas Eve 2023, GTA V’s source code was leaked online. This stemmed from the unprecedented Rockstar Games infiltration which revealed 90 gameplay videos of GTA 6. The GTA V source code was sold and given to some on the dark web back in 2022. Some suggested the GTA San Andreas source code came from this hack too.
