Experts have dissected the recently found higher quality version of the GTA 6 trailer. They have been able to get a better look and understanding of what graphics features Rockstar Games have implemented in the title.
In case you missed it, last week a fan found a better quality version of the GTA VI trailer. Rockstar originally uploaded this trailer to Bilibili back in December 2023 but given it is on a video site mainly for Chinese users and it was paywalled, other fans did not notice.
By signing up to Bilibili Premium, the fan was able to view and download the slightly improved version of Grand Theft Auto 6’s first trailer. As you can see in our comparison article here, there were some nice improvements. Details lost due to their size or shadows could be much easier analysed now.
Experts Weigh In
This led to the graphics experts at Digital Foundry to dive in and take another detailed look. In their latest podcast episode, the team discuss various improvements they have noticed thanks to the higher bitrate.
The most noticeable improvement for them are the reflections. Far more detail can be see across the entire trailer in this department. Screen space reflections can easily be seen on water for example. In contrast, materials such as plastic and metal feature ray traced reflections.
Also, in the overhead shot of the car show, Oliver from Digital Foundry notes we can see screen space shadows cast on the NPCs. However, not all of them are correctly cast on the pedestrians. Despite the issue, it is still a new and more realistic technology compared to what we’ve had in previous games from Rockstar such as GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2.
Another key graphics improvement over the previous game are the windows and inside of builders. They’re fake but really well done. Oliver wonders if it might even be ray traced or a parallax technique for the interiors behind windows.
In other news, Kai Cenat said he is going to stream GTA VI on release day and not stop until he has 100% completed it. Also, Rockstar Games seemingly teased one of the cars from the trailer in the current GTA Online Event Week.
