An integral part of Grand Theft Auto gameplay could be quite different in GTA 6. That is if Rockstar Games move forward with changes they have tested according to reliable insider Tez2.
We might end up seeing the biggest change to a weapon wheel in a GTA game for some time with GTA 6. According to Tez, who has had a long history of sharing inside information, Rockstar Games “experimented” with different Weapon Wheel types in 2024.
These prototypes included smaller wheels/sub-wheels within the main, larger weapon wheel the insider said in a post on the GTA Forums. Tez does issue some caution that given it was something from last year, they wheel “may have been scrapped, or updated to a different style.
Development Changes

We saw similar UI in the 2021 gameplay leaks. In that stage of development, it looked different to the typical GTA Weapon Wheel. The layout resembled something closer to Red Dead Redemption 2’s where there are 3 sections (weapons, equipment, gear) and the weapons on the wheel are placed in the same direction they are on the character’s body.
However, there were multiple different types of designs found in these leaked gameplay videos. Some were more limiting.
One example appeared to show that you could not hold weapons in different hands and you could not carry more than a few unlike in GTA V where you can carry dozens upon dozens. Evidently, Rockstar were still making drastic changes to how weaponry is handled in the game back in 2021 and 2022.
Legacy

The Weapon Wheel has been a staple of combat in Rockstar Games titles since 2009. It was first made for Rockstar’s other franchise Red Dead Redemption. Shortly after, it appeared in GTA Chinatown Wars before becoming key to GTA V and GTA Online’s gameplay. It then got brought over to the Definitive Editions of GTA III, GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas.
Hopefully it won’t be long before we see how Rockstar have decided to handle combat in the latest iteration. In other GTA 6 news, Rockstar teases fans about it in a new and weird GTA Online trailer. Learn more here.
