Videos of GTA 6 could be heavily affected by YouTube’s new restrictions. Videos showing various acts that are the part of the average GTA gameplay experience may face strong restrictions very soon.
The Google-owned video site announced late on Tuesday they would be updating their Community Guidelines to age-restrict even more content on the platform. This will be implemented before the launch of GTA VI.
In a post on their community site, YouTube say they are taking a “strengthened approach” to graphic violence in gaming and online gambling. As of November 17th 2025, new policy changes will come into effect. We’re going to focus on the “Graphic gaming content” of the updated guidelines in this article as it is most relevant to GTA and other Rockstar Games titles.
YouTube Detail Crackdown
YouTube say they will “age-restrict an additional small subset of video game content featuring realistic human characters that focuses on scenes of torture or scenes of mass violence against non-combatants (NPCS). This means if you decide to be quite violent towards NPCs, your video will probably be age-restricted. The consequence of an age-restricted video is that accounts under the age of 18 cannot watch it, they cannot be watched on 3rd party websites or when signed out and ad income will be reduced.
Given GTA IV and other Rockstar Games titles allow you to do this and is part of the gameplay experience, this could be quite widespread. People who create GTA or Red Dead Redemption content will have to be more vigilant with what they post.
YouTube spokesperson Boot Bullwinkle told The Verge creators can choose to play missions with violent content but it would “would lead to an age restriction”. However, blurring or obscuring the violence will be enough.
GTA V’s Story Mode featured a controversial torture scene. There are many videos showing this section in full on YouTube. Those videos are currently not age-restricted but likely will be once the policy change is enforced. Similar violence in other Rockstar titles will likely suffer the same fate.

There Will Be Exclusions
YouTube do go onto say they they will consider several factors when reviewing this type of content” before making a decision. Not every video showing GTA gameplay is going to suffer from this. YouTube’s criteria for decision-making includes:
- Duration – If the graphic scene is sustained (rather than fleeting). For compilation videos, we’ll now consider the cumulative duration of all of the graphic clips combined.
- Prominence – If the violent imagery is zoomed-in or the main focus of the scene.
- Realistic human characters – If the violence is happening to a character that looks like a real human.
This policy change is retroactive meaning videos that contain offending content “may be removed or age-restricted”. It is possible various videos on Rockstar Games titles will soon be locked behind an age restriction or disappear entirely from the platform.
These changes come shortly after YouTube and Google settled a censorship lawsuit with President Donald Trump. They have begun unbanning certain accounts that were terminated for violating rules in the past. Now they are looking to clamp down on content such as video game violence. Previously, Trump suggested on several occasions there was a connection between video games and real-world violence. This is despite no scientific evidence.
