GTA 6 Developer Rockstar Games Reportedly Hacked And Held At Ransom

Rockstar Games have been reportedly hacked once again. Data from the company, some involving GTA 6, might end up spreading across the internet within the next few days.

UPDATE April 12th: Rockstar Games have since confirmed they were hacked in a statement provided by Kotaku: “We can confirm that a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed in connection with a third-party data breach.  This incident has no impact on our organization or our players.”

First reported by thecybersecguru, Rockstar may well be under quite a bit of pressure. ShinyHunters, a hacking group known for their attacks on hundreds of large corporations, have claimed responsibility for this attack.

The hackers explained Rockstar’s own systems weren’t hacked but a 3rd party application used by the company: Anodot. For those unaware, Anodot is an AI-powered financial analytics platform for spending costs etc.

ShinyHunters have not leaked any data from the hack at the moment. They have given Rockstar until Tuesday April 14th to pay a ransom before dumping begins. This is all listed on their site found on the dark web.

Why This Is Different

Companies like Rockstar typically do not pay ransoms so we should expect the deadline to pass and leaks to begin. Given this is a leak from financial software, we won’t be seeing gameplay or source code leaked as we have done before.

This is vastly different. Even though it will be focused on the money side of games development, it could reveal some very interesting insights into Rockstar’s production but also certain parts of GTA VI say on the marketing side. It may even feature information on other projects such as future game releases.

That is pure speculation based on what we know so far. There might not be anything of interest leaked. It would be hard to imagine the hackers don’t have anything that would be harmful for Rockstar though.

We previously wrote about how much Rockstar Games actually pay hackers each year for those who do not hold them at ransom. You can learn more about that here.
