The CEO of Rockstar Games‘ parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has been interviewed about GTA 6, AI usage and more at a technology event. Ahead of their quarterly earnings report and call next week, Strauss Zelnick who runs Take-Two gave his thoughts on how AI is being used and what it will or will not be able to do.
On Wednesday morning, Zelnick was interviewed by CNBC as part of the Technology Executive Council Summit. The panel was titled “Reinvent Play”. So far, only one clip from the event has been released by CNBC. In the video, Zelnick was asked if they are noticing any signs of game development being sped up by AI. Zelnick prefaced his long answer by saying he is not a “naysayer” of AI but “the signs are still limited.”
The reasons he gave for this is that they have to be careful when using AI that it does not make use of other people’s copyrighted work and neither do they want theirs being used.
Stopping ChatGPT From Using GTA?
The interviewer asked the CEO if he had called OpenAI, creators of ChatGPT and Sora, over potentially blocking GTA content in those services. The CEO chuckled but did not say he did that but did note companies like OpenAI are taking a “big risk”. Furthermore, he exclaimed Take-Two care about intellectual property as they make so much of it.
Zelnick took things in a different direction with an hypothetical question. “Let’s say there’s no constraints. Could we push a button tomorrow and say “create an equivalent of Grand Theft Auto and the marketing plan” and here it is? The answer is no.” The CEO continued saying “you wouldn’t end up with anything good. You’d get something derivative.”
“The team’s creativity is extraordinary, and what Rockstar Games tries to do, and so far has done over and over again, is create something that approaches perfection. There is no creativity that can exist by definition in any AI model, because it is data-driven.”

Combating Silicon Valley
Interestingly, Strauss went on to explain why AI is not really original and even if AI companies don’t like to be told that. “Remember what AI is. Sorry, whether people out in Silicon Valley like to hear this or not…AI is big data sets with lots of compute attached to a large language model. Datasets are backwards looking.” He then continued to reduce the power of AI. This must sting to some of the AI company execs who think they will make games with a prompt.
Anything that involves backward-looking data, compute and LLMs, AI’s really good for. Lots of stuff we do at Take-Two. Anything that isn’t attached to that, it will be really, really bad at. If you’re worried about AI-driven machines being evil, put your mind to rest.”
Zelnick previously shutdown use of AI in GTA games and how the series is reported to have caused violence. Learn more here.
