For years, fans have longed for a GTA 4 remaster and with GTA 6’s delay, it seems like it might finally be coming. Not only is GTA IV getting ported to modern consoles but Max Payne 3 would follow if a Rockstar Games insider is to be believed.
Community member Tez2 is known for sharing scoops from within Rockstar Games over the years. These have ranged from upcoming GTA Online update details to datamining re-releases from Rockstar’s own services. On Sunday, he took to the GTA Forums to reveal a very interesting tidbit regarding future re-releases of classic Rockstar Games titles.
GTA VI Remaster Out In 2025?
When asked by a forum user if he has heard about a GTA IV remaster or port to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Tez gave an answer fans have been looking for. He said one of his sources who worked at Rockstar did hint at a GTA 4 port at some point. With the substantial delay of GTA VI to 2026, Tez suggests this remaster has now moved up a year. This means we could see it as early as this year.
Liberty City Mod Removal Fuels Speculation

It was just a few months ago that highly popular mod Liberty City Preservation Project was taken down by Rockstar/Take-Two in a slightly unusual fashion. This led to fans speculating its removal was due to a GTA IV port or remaster in some way being developed.
This happened to similarly large mods before the GTA Trilogy came out. Tez actually said that the GTA IV remaster is “one more reason, in addition to existing reasons, the LCPP mod was taken down.“
Back in 2022, Tez said GTA IV and Red Red Redemption were on the table to be remastered at the company. These were potentially targeting a release after GTA VI but as we know that game has seen a couple of delays. Possibly down to the truly awful reception of the GTA Trilogy remasters, the other games’ remasters were canned.
Kotaku corroborated Tez’s report and said that the remaster resources would now move to GTA 6 and maybe after that is out they are brought back to the table. We did end up getting Red Dead Redemption via Double Eleven so why not GTA IV which is in more of a need of a re-release?
Max Payne 3 Remaster Too?

Another thing Tez mentioned is that Rockstar had plans before the covid-19 pandemic to bring Max Payne 3 to current hardware after GTA IV as well. If they still want to do so, we could see Max Payne 3 ported to current consoles around the time of the Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake. Tez says it “is an opportunity to do a bundle or a Definitive Edition. Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes, and a Max Payne 3 port.”
The Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake was looking to release in the first half of 2026 potentially. Though with it being a Rockstar Games published title and they are doing all the marketing, we might see it moved to later in 2026 due to GTA VI’s delayed release date.
Why Re-release GTA 4?

GTA IV is playable via backward compatibility on newer Xbox consoles and it is a great way to play it. The game has an unlocked framerate so Xbox Series X runs it at 60FPS. However, PS5 and PS4 owners cannot enjoy Liberty City and the PC version of GTA IV is also not to nice to run on current hardware. Oh, and Nintendo are releasing the Switch 2 in June.
Running the game at 60FPS on all consoles would also be fantastic along with a PC build that, well, functions properly. If we were to receive a simply port that spruces things up a little it would certainly excite fans and tide them over for the next year until GTA VI’s release.
Double Eleven re-released Red Dead Redemption on PS4, Switch and PC over the past two and those were great successes. The team at that studio faithfully ported the game over to those platforms identically with some improvements such as a 60FPS mode on PS5 and graphics settings on PC. If they were to do a port of GTA 4, I think it would be in great hands.
In GTA VI news, we have an exact hour the game will go live on release day though this has caused some upset within the GTA community. Also, we’ve started to build a list of the songs confirmed for the game’s radio stations here. Plus, Rockstar posted their first ever TikTok and blast past a million followers.

If I wanted to pay GTA 4, I’d hook up my ps3. The fact that they aren’t done trying to RESELL their old BS is despicable.
