Rockstar Games will finally release the next-gen version of GTA V and GTA Online for PC in the near future. We’ll be taking a look at everything that has been shared by Rockstar Games alongside a reputable dataminer and insider.
First announced back in 2020, the so-called “Expanded and Enhanced” version of GTA V was said to deliver exclusive content and features to the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2021. However, it suffered a few delays and dropped the “Expanded and Enhanced” name after fans expressed their anger towards having to buy the game again for what seemed like a somewhat lacklustre upgrade. Then in 2022 it released but only for Xbox Series X|S and PS5. The PC version had not been mentioned by Rockstar at all.
It took a couple of years but Rockstar eventually confirmed PC would be getting the next-gen version of GTA V and GTA Online. When Rockstar mentioned this re-release back in November’s Community Update, they said they’re bringing “the much-requested PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S features of GTA Online to the PC platform in the new year.”
When Will It Release?
We are now in 2025 and Rockstar published their first Newswire post of the year without any mention of the PC upgrade. That said, Rockstar could look to get it out around the time of their parent company’s end of quarter report in February. If not, the next quarter will be in May.
According to reputable Rockstar insider Tez2, he said on the GTA forums that he thinks this update was supposed to release in November and is a situation similar to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release. The consoles were supposed to get it towards the end of 2021 Rockstar put it out in Spring 2022. Tez suggests PC will get this upgrade in March or April this year.
Ray Tracing
The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S version of GTA V features ray traced reflections, shadows and ambient occlusion. This is one of the most wanted parts of that version of GTA V to be up and running on PC. There is far more capable hardware available on PC so fans are excited to see how much better the game can look. Tez2 has stated Rockstar came up with a new scaleform function for 2 memory bars up from the current single one. Plus, there will be a tooltip for one of these bars as well. Tez suggests this is for ray tracing.
Will You Have To Buy GTA V Again?
As we know, Tez2 datamines Rockstar’s Game Launcher among other things. According to the man himself, the Rockstar Games Launcher does have data to suggest it will be a separate new version of the game rather than an update to GTA V’s current PC version that came out in 2015. This could mean it will have to be purchased again and won’t be free.
Tez explains Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online are two separate apps whereas it appears GTA V’s new version won’t be. This is despite GTA Online getting a standalone app on console with the next-gen release.
Save Migration
In the Agents of Sabotage update, Rockstar added a small detail which Tez thinks shows how they will handle game save migration for this new PC version. He says PC has been added to the “ALLOW_EXPORT_OF_SP_SAVEGAMES” section. So, single player save migration will come to PC likely how players on Xbox One and PS4 could bring over their GTA Online data to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. He does not know if you’ll be able to bring over your next-gen console data to this new PC version though.
Coming To Xbox Game Pass?
Another interesting tidbit from Tez is that Rockstar did add support for Xbox’s PC Game Pass subscription service with the Bottom Dollar Bounties update last summer. Whilst this the last gen version of GTA V, Tez thinks we could get the next gen version on PC Game Pass as well perhaps even at launch. We previously reported on leaked court documents that revealed how Rockstar wanted GTA V for PC on Game Pass but it has not come about yet. Same goes for a next-gen version of Red Dead Redemption 2 which Rockstar never actually released.
Rockstar Tracking Progress
One of the features part of the next-gen version of GTA Online is Career Progress. This challenge system includes 4 tiers across all of GTA Online from businesses to jobs. Completing the criteria for each tier grants rewards some only available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. This will be coming to PC as well.
Given some players have spent up to nearly 3 years on the PC version without Career Progress, a fan asked Tez if Rockstar will retroactively award progress once this feature comes to PC. Tez did confirm Rockstar are still tracking all of this information on PC.
