You Can Now Play GTA 3 On Sega Dreamcast Thanks To Fans

The fan project that had hoped to bring GTA III to the Dreamcast has released a playable version of the whole game to the public to play on their Sega system.

We reported back in September about a group of Dreamcast modding enthusiasts who were attempting to bring Rockstar’s first 3D GTA game to the console it was originally going to release on. Over two decades ago, Rockstar Games were developing GTA III for the Sega Dreamcast. It became a PS2 title instead with an official Dreamcast port never seeing the light of day. This game changed the lives of many and to see it still have a new iteration years on thanks to hard work by the community is very cool.

Considerable progress was made from the start of the project to when we reported on it and the following weeks. The game became playable on modified Dreamcast consoles with additional RAM along with some bugs. This filled those who dreamt of playing GTA III on Dreamcast it would certainly be possible in only a matter of time. Even one of the game’s original senior developers took to Twitter and praised this ongoing community project.

That brings us to the end of 2024 and the project titled “DCA3” has been publicly released in a Alpha state. This comes from one of the various people attempting this difficult task, @falco_girgis. He announced his playable build is now live for everyone to enjoy. He and the others are not stopping and will continue to make updates to this game.

There are a few steps required to get it up and running but it will work on your very own Sega Dreamcast. One of them involves owning a legitimate copy of the PC version of the game. You can learn how to download and install the Dreamcast version of the game here.

The Dreamcast controller design is fairly iconic and we’ve got a look at how it is used to control GTA III below. This layout image is from from Frogbull’s Patreon and it displays all of the actions and what buttons they are mapped to. According to the developers, the layout was inspired by the controls found in the PSP version of of GTA Liberty City Stories.

As always, we look forward to seeing the continued development of this project throughout 2025.
