New GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition Update Broken On Steam Deck But Fix Is Here

The remastered version of the GTA Trilogy received a major update yesterday. It fixed many of the outstanding issues present in the collection plus added classic lighting to make the games feel closer to the original artistic intent by Rockstar. Whilst this update has been well-received across all platforms by fans, a smaller subset have found the game is broken upon launching when using the Steam Deck.

Thankfully, there is a simple fix Rockstar Games have given us to resolve it. That said, this is still a temporary work around until a new patch is released. Based on various factors, we should believe a patch is indeed in the works.

It all kicked off yesterday when the update was released. Some disgruntled fans took to reddit and shared their frustration that the update presented a “fatal error” message when booting the trilogy. This was the second time in a month or so that Rockstar had caused issues with Steam Deck. Fans are still annoyed they can’t play GTA V on Linux anymore. Despite that, many users have pointed out this is more likely an issue on Proton’s part and could be fixed by that team.

Fix here, fix there

Since then, Rockstar Games have issued a new article on their support site detailing how to resolve the error message and inability to load the games. Below are the steps to take to stop the error:

  1. Select the game you want to play from your Steam library
  2. Select the gear icon on the right of the page
  3. Select Properties…
  4. In General, select the field under LAUNCH OPTIONS and enter:
    %command% -dx12
  5. Select Back to return to the game launch page
  6. Select Play to launch the game

Rockstar also note they are “aware of this issue and are currently investigating a solution”. This suggests they will patch the game meaning these steps won’t be necessary. On top of that, new builds have been submitted to the Steam backend. If a new update is released, we’ll be sure to update you.
