Rockstar Games end support for Windows 7 and 8 in their games

Rockstar Games have ended support for Windows 7 and 8 across their titles. The company announced this decision back in October 2023 but has come into effect as of Tuesday 30th January with a new update they’ve released.

This means if you want to play Rockstar Games titles such as GTA V, GTA Online, Red Dead Redemption 2, The GTA Trilogy, Max Payne 3, and more you will need upgrade your operating system to either Windows 10 or 11.

Windows 7 was around six years old when GTA V launched for PC and it has been a long road of GTA Online updates over the course of the past eight years.

Rockstar Games Launcher update

The Rockstar Games launcher received an update today which makes it no longer possible to open games if you’re using Windows 7/8. This is a small update that will automatically occur when you open the application.

In a new post on the Rockstar Support website, we can learn what was included in this update.

Rockstar Games Launcher Title Update Notes 1.0.84.1829

  • Support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 has been removed from the Rockstar Games Launcher
  • Improvements have been made to the stability of the Rockstar Games Launcher
  • Minor bug fixes have been made to the Rockstar Games Launcher

It is worth noting that many major games have also stopped supporting Windows 7/8 in the last few months and not limited to Rockstar. Even Steam as an entire platform does not support Windows 7 or 8 any more as of January 1st 2024.

FiveM also impacted

The team behind FiveM, Cfx.re, also noted their platforms will no longer support the older versions of Windows as of January 30th. In their monthly blog post to their community, the group stated “FiveM will cease to support these operating systems beginning January 30, 2024.” Cfx.re were purchased by Rockstar Games back in August 2023 and have been working closely together since.

Why is this happening?

Microsoft ended their own support for these versions of Windows back in 2020 and 2023 respectively. This is nothing out of the ordinary and happens with most OS’s over time. With no new security updates, it is best to update to Windows 10 and 11 to receive the latest security.

You can check if your PC is compatible with Windows 11 here so you know upgrading can happen on your system.
